Using Your Fire Ring For S'Mores!

By | Fire Pit Recipes, Fire Pits, Fire Rings, outdoor living | No Comments

When you were a kid you probably went on camp-outs, complete with hot dogs, ghost stories and the king of all outdoor treats, the s’more. As the weather warms up you may hear the call of the wild (or at least the call of the organized camp ground) and think it’s time to head out.

But how about camping in your own backyard? It’s easy, cheap and all it takes is the desire to do it and bam! you’re outside under the stars. But what about the campfire? Camping isn’t the same without weenies a’roasting and s’mores a’toasting. Your neighborhood association probably frowns on bonfires in your backyard so what do you do? This is where the fire ring saves the day (or night)! Do it yourself fire ring kits are an easy way to ensure you’ll always have a place to roast, toast or just relax.

And along with your new fire ring it’s time to liven up the classic s’more.  The s’more loyalist will always enjoy chocolate bars, graham crackers and marshmallows but how about mixing it up once in a while? Try these new and improved recipes and top off those tummies before you head into your backyard campground. Or just back in the house when you realize mosquitoes also live outdoors.

Nutty Banana S’mores– Graham crackers, a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, sliced banana, and marshmallow. Substitute Nutella instead of Reese’s for the extra mile.

Strawberry and Chocolate S’mores– Add strawberry slices to graham crackers, dark chocolate, and roasted marshmallow.

Chocolate and Peanut Butter S’mores-Spread peanut butter onto the graham cracker, or chocolate wafer, and then add the chocolate and marshmallow.

Spicy S’mores– Graham crackers, marshmallows, milk chocolate, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Snowy S’mores-White chocolate, chocolate wafer and marshmallow with a drizzle of caramel.

If you’re looking for the perfect complement to your outdoor lifestyle the Fire Ring kit from Olympic Lawn is the marshmallow to your chocolate. They’re easy to install, last a lifetime and provide warmth, comfort and beauty for all your outdoor entertaining. Call us at 816-697-2720 for a free estimate and design assistance!

Three Ways to Have Fun with your Fire Pit

By | Fire Pit Recipes, Fire Pits, Fire Rings, outdoor living, Outdoor patio | No Comments

Fire pits are the newest outdoor living trend that’s trickled into most American homes. The enjoyment of walking out the door to your backyard and enjoying a quiet evening of ambiance over a fire – in summer or winter – is a great new pastime for many.

Many people simply light a fire, prop their feet up and enjoy their fire pits. But for those looking for some new and creative ways to use your fire pit, here are three ideas:

1. Make foil dinners with your Fire Pit

You don’t have to be a boy scout or girl scout to make foil dinners! Take a rectangular piece of foil and place a raw hamburger patty in the center. Then, stick vegetables like carrots, onions and potatoes  into the meat, and surrounding the burger patty. Wrap the foil up so that all of the food is covered, and place foil packs over the fire. Continually check on the meat, and once all of the “pink” is gone, you’ve got a campfire dinner.

2. Tell Scary Stories around your Fire Pit

One of the best parts of a campfire is telling scary stories! With a fire pit, you don’t have to go camping to enjoy fun times around a fire. Take a flashlight and shine it under the storyteller’s chin. Pass it around and have everyone at the fire contribute to the stories. Adults and kids can all join in, and have fun trying to come up with the scariest scenario.

3. Make Fish Tacos on your Fire Pit

When it comes to fire pits, most people think of roasting hot dogs and marshmallows for smores. One new idea is to change up the typical food you’d expect to prepare with a fire pit, like fish tacos! The tortillas can be warmed when placed directly over the fire. Click here for step-by-step instructions on making fish tacos on your fire pit!

Keep the Bugs out of your Outdoor Patios

Imagine the scene: you head outside after a long day at work and kick up your feet with a cold drink as you watch the crackles come from your grand fireplace or fire pit. It’s perfect, there’s no TV nor computers to worry about. Just you and the fire… and the bugs.

Although a fire and smoke is said to keep the bugs away, as soon as you walk too far away from the smoke, you’ll be the target of a host of outdoor party crashing bugs.

Keep Bugs Away at Night

If you’re also an outdoor enthusiast and enjoy relaxing in your outdoor patio, you know that we’re not the only ones who enjoy a relaxing backyard living area. So do bugs. And before you know it, they’ve run you out of the backyard and into the house. If you’re looking for ways to beat the bugs and stay in your outdoor patio, here are a few suggestions.

Look into a ThermaCell Lantern

ThermaCELL offers several products that repel mosquitoes and other bugs up to a 15×15-foot area.

Deep Woods Bug Spray

Go ahead and get the “deep woods” bug spray. Sure, your outdoor patio might not exactly be “deep woods,” but you’ll get the best coverage that will make the bugs run from you. You can also get a large hat with a wide brim and spray it on the brim if you don’t like the spray on your skin.

Botanical Lotion

If you don’t like the smell of bug spray or the idea of using it in general, try a plant-based lotion. These lotions are also designed to repel the pesky outdoor bugs.

Tiki Torches and Candles

Look into decorating your outdoor patio with some fun tiki torches or citronella candles. The torches will give off less odor; but both give off scents and flames to repel the bugs.

Check your Diet

Some swear that eating lots of garlic will keep the bugs away; they say the smells in your skin will repel mosquitoes. So if you’re hosting a party, place some raw garlic bulbs on those pub tables and let your guests snack away… just kidding. Or if you take us up on that, make sure to offer gum, too.

Warm up your Winter | Utilizing your Fire Ring

By | Fire Pits, Fire Rings | No Comments

As soon as snow hits the ground, most people are ready to stay locked up indoors. But if you own a fire ring, enjoying the snow outside can be even more fun than just looking at it from the window. Since fire rings can be used year round, winter weather is a great time to utilize them!

Family Time with a Fire Pit

One of the great things to do as a family in the winter is to pack up and head to a Colorado lodge for skiing and marshmallows around the fire pit. These days though, you don’t have to travel further than your own back yard to have the same elegance of a winter lodge for a lot less money. This lodge-effect is occurring at social and family gatherings with the increase purchases of outdoor fire rings.

These things are fantastic, and they allow you to enjoy all your winter weather fun outside as a family. Have a hill in your back yard, grab your sled, dash through the snow then warm up by the outdoor fire. Want to grill out for dinner or roast a couple of marshmallows while looking at the starry night sky? Put the cooking grate on top of the fire pit and roast away. What a better way to spend time as a family than being close together around the fire.

Fire Pits Make A Good Investment

One of the best things about a fire ring is that it can be used all year round. Regardless of temperature, the fire ring is always ready to go. The materials used are not only durable, but highlight your patio design!

Fire Pit Construction

The fire ring is made up of high quality stone. This stone is easy to clean and there is little maintenance involved. Because the stone used is a high grade stone, the fire ring lasts a long time, allowing you to enjoy it for years and not worry about having to replace it all the time.

Curb Appeal

The fire ring can be used as the centerpiece for your patio. Creating a landscaping design with your patio in mind can totally change the layout of your yard. A fire ring can bring all of your landscaping together. This lodge-type effect adds curb appeal to your home.

Home Value

Adding curb appeal to your home increases the value of your home. Fire rings add elegance to the outside of your home and can create a warm and cozy atmosphere. And if you are worried about the initial investment of a fire ring, seek out a company that will do a free estimate for your patio.

If you own a fire ring, be sure to utilize it to its full potential this year. Enjoy some time with the family around the fire and warm up on those cool winter nights!
